Credit Records and Driving Records Effect Auto Insurance Rates

My best friend mentioned that she was going to see if she could find lower insurance rates at a discount auto insurance company. I was sure that she could find what she was looking for but I suggested that she check her driving record and her credit record before she asks for quotes. I had recently read an article that said most insurance companies will check your credit score and determine your premiums based on that number. Although I do not agree with the tactic, if it is true, then my friend should be prepared for a higher premium since she says that she has a low credit score.
