Opinion On “Switzerland Sets Roman Polanski Free”

I understand the distinction between legal advice forum and moral rules. Most of the comments regarding this story have discussed the legal aspects of the case and ignored the moral ones. I understand that the Swiss feel the need to follow the law. However, we also need to be careful that we don’t loose sight of the purpose of the any system, legal or otherwise. When laws or rules lead to bad or unjust (use what ever term you like) consequences by blindly following them, then the law or rule should not be obeyed. History should teach us that when we ignore our moral obligations, we do it at our peril. .

My comments about this case were regarding the statements that I have heard and read in the popular media. Somehow a distinction is made between date rape by the average person and someone of Mr. Polansky’s position. And by the way, two wrongs do not make a right. Because one party screws up, it does not give the other party the right to also make the wrong choice.
